National Day Parade

The Padang, Marina Bay

Singapore’s birthday parade has been held on 9 August since 1966, from dusk into the night, with a show, the national pledge and anthem, and fireworks. In 2027 it is at the Padang to mark 60 years of National Service, and tickets are shared by ballot.

  1. Day 1 · Sat 7 Aug

    Two temples, one road

Chinatown first, while it is still early enough to pretend the heat is fine: a Hindu temple and a Buddhist one, a few minutes apart on South Bridge Road.

    • Sri Mariamman Temple45 min

Singapore’s first and oldest Hindu temple, founded in 1827. A six-tiered gateway tower covered in painted figures rises over the entrance.

      What to see

      • The gopuram, the painted gateway tower
      • The shrines inside
      • The Chinatown streets around it
      Time
      About 45 minutes.
      Tip
Shoes come off at the door and are left near the entrance, so wear sandals. Cover shoulders and knees, and ask before taking photos of worshippers.
      To eat
Chicken rice, poached chicken on rice cooked in its stock, from a nearby hawker centre.
    • Buddha Tooth Relic Temple1 h

A Tang-style Buddhist temple completed in 2007. A relic said to be a tooth of the Buddha is kept on the fourth floor, though its origin is claimed rather than proven.

      What to see

      • The relic in its Sacred Light Chamber
      • The red and gold main hall
      • The Ten Thousand Buddha Pagoda
      Time
      About an hour.
      Tip
Dress modestly and keep your voice down in the prayer halls. The temple is a short walk from the previous one, so do both in the same morning.
      To eat
Kaya toast with soft-boiled eggs and kopi, Singapore’s classic breakfast.
  2. Day 2 · Sun 8 Aug

    Gardens before the rain

A UNESCO garden in the morning, before the air turns to soup, then the golden domes of Kampong Glam for the afternoon.

    • Singapore Botanic Gardens2.5 h

Founded in 1859 and listed by UNESCO in 2015, the gardens are open from 5 a.m. and free to enter, apart from the National Orchid Garden inside.

      What to see

      • The National Orchid Garden
      • Symphony Lake
      • The rainforest patch
      Time
      Two to three hours.
      Tip
Go early, when the paths are cool and there’s no queue. If the rain starts, shelters are never far, so keep walking and wait it out.
      To eat
Ice kachang, shaved ice with sweet syrup and jelly, to cool down.
    • Sultan Mosque and Kampong Glam1.5 h

Completed in 1826 and rebuilt in its present form in 1932, the mosque has golden domes and is open to visitors of other faiths. Kampong Glam, around it, is a quarter of small shops.

      What to see

      • The golden domes
      • The prayer hall from the entrance
      • The shop-lined lanes nearby
      Time
About an hour and a half.
      Tip
Cover your shoulders and knees, and be ready to take your shoes off. Visits are limited around prayer times, so plan your arrival for between them.
      To eat
Murtabak, a pan-fried flatbread stuffed with minced meat and egg.
  3. Day 3 · Mon 9 Aug

    Happy birthday, Singapore

It is National Day. We spend the day among the giant metal trees at Gardens by the Bay, then save a spot by the water for the evening, because the party ends with fireworks.

    • Gardens by the Bay3 h

A park by Marina Bay where 18 Supertrees, from 25 to 50 metres tall, are covered in plants. Two large glasshouses, the Flower Dome and the Cloud Forest, are the indoor refuge.

      What to see

      • The Supertree Grove
      • The Cloud Forest’s 35-metre waterfall
      • The Flower Dome
      Time
      About three hours.
      Tip
Walk among the Supertrees in the morning and keep the glasshouses for the hot hours or for the rain. The Gardens’ website has the current ticket options.
      To eat
Laksa, noodles in a spicy coconut broth.
    • Marina Bay waterfrontEvening

The water’s edge of Marina Bay, a short walk from the Padang, where the parade is held in 2027. The parade ends with fireworks, a medley of National Day songs, the pledge and the anthem.

      What to see

      • The skyline around the bay
      • The fireworks over the water
      • The crowds in red and white
      Time
      The whole evening.
      Tip
The parade itself is ticketed by ballot. For the fireworks, check the organisers’ website for the public viewing spots in 2027, and arrive well ahead.
      To eat
Satay, grilled skewers with peanut sauce, eaten standing up.
  4. Day 4 · Tue 10 Aug

    A hill, a bunker and a curry

A calm morning on Fort Canning Hill, once called the Forbidden Hill, and an afternoon in Little India that should come with a nap.

    • Fort Canning Park2 h

A 48-metre hill in the city centre, known to Malays as Bukit Larangan, the Forbidden Hill. It was thought to be the burial place of ancient kings. Raffles later built his house here.

      What to see

      • The Spice Garden, a replica of Raffles’ first experimental garden
      • The Battle Box, the wartime bunker
      • The Gothic gates
      Time
      About two hours.
      Tip
The Battle Box, an underground bunker built in 1938, is run as a separate attraction. The park is shady but full of mosquitoes, so put on repellent.
      To eat
Hainanese chicken rice or a plate of char kway teow, fried flat noodles.
    • Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple1 h

A temple to the goddess Kali in the middle of Little India, built in 1881 by Bengali workers in the South Indian Tamil style.

      What to see

      • The tower over the gate
      • The images of Kali and Parvati
      • The shops and garlands on Serangoon Road
      Time
      About an hour.
      Tip
Remove your shoes at the entrance and dress modestly. Kali is shown with a garland of skulls, so warn anyone who is not expecting it.
      To eat
Roti prata with curry, or a banana-leaf rice meal.
  5. Day 5 · Wed 11 Aug

    An island, then an airport

A bumboat to Pulau Ubin, where Singapore pretends to be a village, then a waterfall indoors, at the airport. It sounds like a joke, but it is a real stop.

    • Pulau UbinMorning

An island of about ten square kilometres off the north-east coast, reached by a ten-minute bumboat from Changi Point. It is one of Singapore’s last rural areas, with no public transport.

      What to see

      • Ubin Town and its bike shops
      • The Chek Jawa wetlands boardwalk
      • The old flooded granite quarries
      Time
      A morning, with the boat.
      Tip
Bumboats leave when they are full, so allow time to wait. Rent a bike in Ubin Town and take water, as the island has little shade.
      To eat
Nasi lemak, coconut rice with fried fish and sambal, before you cross.
    • Jewel Changi Airport1.5 h

A complex next to Changi Airport, opened in 2019, built around a 40-metre indoor waterfall, the Rain Vortex. It is linked to Terminals 1, 2 and 3.

      What to see

      • The Rain Vortex
      • The gardens of the Canopy Park on the top floor
      • The light and sound show on the waterfall at night
      Time
About an hour and a half.
      Tip
The light-and-sound show is at night, so if your flight is in the evening, ask the staff when it starts and have a last look before check-in.
      To eat
Chilli crab with fried buns, sticky and messy, the dish of the trip.

The first National Day Parade took place on 9 August 1966, and it is held on that date every year.

On the route: Day 3, Marina Bay

Back to the Padang

In 2027 the parade is at the Padang again, to mark 60 years of National Service. The Padang is smaller than the National Stadium, used in 2026.

Tickets by ballot

Parade tickets have been handed out through an online ballot since 2003. Nobody queues overnight for them.

It ends with a bang

The parade finishes with fireworks, a medley of National Day songs, the pledge and the national anthem.
