Downtown Dubai

  1. Day 1 · Tue 30 Nov

    Old Dubai by boat

We start where the city started, in the lanes of Al Fahidi. Then a wooden abra boat across the creek, and the gold and spice souks on the other side. Mira’s job is to count the wind towers.

    • Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood1 h 30

The best-preserved old quarter of Dubai, once known as Bastakiya, beside the creek in Bur Dubai. Its narrow lanes, courtyard houses and wind towers are good for exploring with children.

      What to see

      • The wind towers on the rooftops
      • The courtyard houses
      • The narrow, shaded lanes
      Time
About an hour and a half.
      Tip
The lanes are free to walk. The Dubai Museum in Al Fahidi Fort has been reported closed for restoration, so check before planning to go in.
      To eat
Karak chai, strong spiced tea with milk, and luqaimat, little sweet dumplings with date syrup.
    • Abra across Dubai Creek30 min

Abras are small wooden boats that carry passengers across the creek between Bur Dubai and Deira, a short ride the children will remember.

      What to see

      • The old wooden boats
      • The Deira waterfront from the water
      • The traders’ dhows moored along the creek
      Time
      A short ride across.
      Tip
Boats leave when they are full, so there is no timetable to check. Keep the children seated and hold bags on your lap.
      To eat
Fresh juice from a stall on the Deira side.
    • Gold and Spice Souks, Deira1 h 30

Covered lanes of gold jewellery shops stand beside narrow lanes of spices, dried fruit and frankincense, on the Deira side of the creek.

      What to see

      • The jewellery windows of the Gold Souk
      • The sacks of spices and dried fruit
      • The frankincense and dried limes
      Time
About an hour and a half.
      Tip
In the Spice Souk bargaining is expected. Gold is usually sold by weight with a charge for the work, so compare a few shops before buying.
      To eat
Dried dates and nuts to share in the Spice Souk.
  2. Day 2 · Wed 1 Dec

    The story of the union

A guided visit to Jumeirah Mosque in the morning, then the Etihad Museum, which tells how the emirates came together in 1971. At dusk, the tallest building in the world.

    • Jumeirah Mosque1 h 15

One of the few mosques in Dubai open to non-Muslim visitors, in a medieval Fatimid style, on guided visits run by the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding.

      What to see

      • The two minarets and the dome
      • The prayer hall
      • The guide’s talk on local customs
      Time
      About an hour.
      Tip
There are two guided visits a day, Saturday to Thursday, and the mosque is closed on Fridays. Registration opens 30 minutes before. Cover shoulders and knees, and wear a scarf over the hair.
      To eat
Balaleet, sweet vermicelli with an omelette on top, for an Emirati breakfast.
    • Etihad Museum1 h 30

The museum of the UAE’s founding in 1971, built beside Union House, where the founding rulers met. It is the best place to understand what National Day is about.

      What to see

      • Union House
      • The story of the founding rulers
      • The exhibits on the first years of the union
      Time
About an hour and a half.
      Tip
Guided tours run several times a day. Hours and ticketing can change on public holidays, which is why we come on the 1st, the day before National Day.
      To eat
Arabic coffee, gahwa, with dates, offered in many Emirati settings.
    • Burj Khalifa and the Dubai Fountain2 h

The Burj Khalifa is 828 metres tall and is the tallest building in the world. At its foot, beside Burj Lake, the Dubai Fountain performs in the evenings.

      What to see

      • The tower lit up at dusk
      • The fountain show on Burj Lake
      • The view from the observation decks
      Time
      About two hours.
      Tip
Book the observation deck ahead for the slot you want, and check the fountain show times on the day.
      To eat
Ma’amoul, shortbread filled with dates, as a snack by the lake.
  3. Day 3 · Thu 2 Dec

    National Day

A public holiday, with flags on every street. We go where the celebrations have been in recent years, Expo City by day and Global Village in the evening, and stay up for the fireworks if the children can.

    • Expo City Dubai3 h

The site of Expo 2020, now a district for visitors. Its centrepiece is Al Wasl Plaza, covered by a trellis dome, where live shows were held for National Day in 2025.

      What to see

      • The Al Wasl dome
      • The open plazas for children
      • National Day performances, if running
      Time
      About three hours.
      Tip
The Metro Red Line reaches Expo City. The National Day programme is announced shortly before, so check Expo City’s site for 2027.
      To eat
Machboos, spiced rice with meat, a typical Emirati dish.
    • Global VillageEvening

A seasonal park with pavilions from many countries, food stalls and shows. For National Day in 2025 it planned fireworks, drone shows and a dance show in the flag’s colours.

      What to see

      • The country pavilions
      • The fireworks and drone show
      • The food stalls
      Time
      The whole evening.
      Tip
Entry is paid and the park is very busy on National Day. Check the 2027–28 season dates and the fireworks times on its official site, and agree a meeting point in case the children wander off.
      To eat
Street snacks from the pavilions, and luqaimat for dessert.
  4. Day 4 · Fri 3 Dec

    Future and dunes

The Museum of the Future in the morning, with a timed ticket, then a late-afternoon trip into the desert to watch the sun go down.

    • Museum of the Future2 h 30

An oval building with Arabic calligraphy cut into its façade, opened in February 2022. Inside, the exhibitions look at the future through technology, sustainability and design.

      What to see

      • The calligraphy on the façade
      • The exhibition floors
      • The view of the tower from outside
      Time
About two and a half hours.
      Tip
Entry is by timed ticket, so book ahead on the museum’s official site and arrive a little before your slot.
      To eat
Lunch at the food court in Downtown, then ice cream for the children.
    • Dubai Desert Conservation ReserveLate afternoon to evening

A protected stretch of desert outside the city, home to Arabian oryx. It can only be entered with a tour, and the evening light on the dunes is why we go.

      What to see

      • The dunes at sunset
      • The Arabian oryx, if we are lucky
      • The stars after dark
      Time
Four to five hours, with transfers.
      Tip
Sunset is around half past five in early December, so a departure around 15:00 reaches the dunes in good light. Choose an operator that stays within the reserve’s rules, and ask whether the ride is bumpy if the children get carsick.
      To eat
A camp dinner of grilled meat and flatbread is the usual finish.
  5. Day 5 · Sat 4 Dec

    A last paddle

A calm morning on the creek at Al Seef, then the beach at Umm Suqeim, with the Burj Al Arab in view, before the flight home.

    • Al Seef1 h 30

A waterfront promenade on the creek, built in the style of the old town, with shops, cafés and boats. It is an easy walk from Al Fahidi, so it makes a calm last morning.

      What to see

      • The creekside promenade
      • The old-style shopfronts
      • The boats on the water
      Time
About an hour and a half.
      Tip
Go before the day warms up, and leave enough time to collect the bags and reach the airport.
      To eat
A karak chai and a pastry from a café on the promenade.
    • Umm Suqeim Beach1 h 30

A public beach with a view of the Burj Al Arab, the hotel shaped like a sail. The sea is cool in December but fine for a paddle.

      What to see

      • The Burj Al Arab across the water
      • The children paddling
      • The long sandy shore
      Time
About an hour and a half.
      Tip
It’s a weekend day, so expect families, and bring sun cream and towels. The December sun is still strong at midday.
      To eat
Fresh coconut water from a beach stall, if one is open.
